Spain, working with the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT), has organised the ‘Sixth International Symposium on Asystolic Organ Donation’.

Asystolic organ donation is where organs are donated following a person’s death due to sudden cardiac arrest. Europe has decided to focus strongly on this kind of donation, since it is a good way of increasing transplants. Spain has an asystolic organ donation programme that serves as an example for many countries, and this is why its National Transplant Organisation (ONT) has organised the ‘Sixth International Symposium on Asystolic Organ Donation’ in Paris.

Rafael Matesanz, director of the ONT, spoke today as guest of honour before the French National Assembly. During his speech, he described Spain’s experience in the field of asystolic organ donation, which arouses great admiration in many other countries. Matesanz said: “This kind of organ donation is the clearest route for increasing organ transplants in coming years”.

The symposium is being attended by representatives from various countries (the United Kingdom, Holland and France) and the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT). The event has highlighted the importance of increasing this kind of donation as an alternative to make up for the fall in brain dead donors and the reduction in fatal traffic accidents.

According to data from the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation, asystolic organ donation accounts for 8% of all donations. This kind of donation is highly developed in English-speaking countries such as Australia, the United States and Canada. The most important country for this kind of donation in Europe is Holland, which heads the world league table, followed by the United Kingdom, Belgium and Spain, which is ranked fourth in Europe.
