The world of indie movies is a huge world. But most of the moviegoers are not even aware of this world. Everyone thinks about those commercial blockbusters that get released every year. But when you go deep inside the global world cinema of indie movies, there is something special that you discover. Take for example some of the indie African American films. There are names of movies and directors that you wouldn’t even have heard of. But these movies and their directors have left an indelible mark in the world of cinema.

The best African American films are not just about gangs, action and violence. This is a myth that has been propagated by Hollywood. There are some African American filmmakers that have transcended the boundaries of moviemaking and some of their movies are works of art. These filmmakers don’t make movies to make money. They are deeply in love with the concept of cinema and this is why they are able to come up with such masterpieces. Many of their movies have become integral parts of global world cinema.

Do The Right Thing (USA) is a movie by Spike Lee that was released in 1989. This movie shows how the hottest day of the year was in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn. This controversial movie showed a powerful portrait of the urban racial tension in the area where it is based. It is one of the most critically acclaimed films in this category.

Daughters Of The Dust (USA) is directed by Julie Dash and it released in 1991. This is the first film that explored the Gullah tradition. The movie portrays the early 1900s where the Pazants family prepares for the migration from their island home to move to the mainland.

Xala (Senegal) is a movie directed by Ousmane Sembéne and it was released in 1975. This movie is about a prosperous Muslim businessman, who, despite all his western ways, is still polygamous. He marries a beautiful woman and takes her as his third wife. The movie showcases his misfortune when he is rendered impotent by a curse and his economic fortune collapses.

There are numerous such African American films that you probably wouldn’t even have heard of. These movies are all independently made and they vary in their duration. Some of these movies are standard length and some of them are extremely short in duration. However, the rich storytelling in all these movies is what makes them so special. The global world cinema is littered with such movies that were not made keeping profit in mind.

The global world cinema is a diverse place. You get to know more about this world as you explore deeper and deeper. There are independent movies from across the world that will open up your senses. You will be dumbstruck as you soak in the message that comes out of the wonderful African American films and films from other countries.
