Some Popular Themes for Prom

Posted March 20, 2014 by saradavid

Sometimes you can come up with a great theme for prom and find the perfect decorating kits. Other times, not so much. Or, you want to go a different route than the kits provide.

1. Theme for Prom: Ancient Greece Prom Theme

The first thought when someone mentions an Ancient Greece theme are scenes from Animal House's Toga Party -- Not at all what we mean.

Greece is a country filled with history, myths and adventure. A Greek themed event has loads of possibilities for a feeling of romance through decor, attire, theme title and setting the scene.

Think elegant gardens with statuary, fountains, greenery, columns and the like. Plan out your space so you have Mt. Olympus, the Parthenon, and an elegant garden area, a photo-op area with Greek or Roman Ruins or a Mediterranean Sea back drop -- you get the idea.

Gods and Goddesses rein supreme in the land of Ancient Greece. Come up with some catchy titles to name your prom:

A Greek Paradise
Evening in Ancient Athens
Under the Grecian Moon
Mediterranean Moonlight
Mythical, Magical Memories

Togas are optional -- we prefer flowing gowns and tuxedos.

2. Oriental Theme for Prom: Elegance of the East

Parasols, lanterns and red and black seem to rule the Oriental theme kits for prom. Take the elements you like and leave the others behind when coming up with your own unique prom decor. Maybe you're tired of Asian themes always being black and red. Most of the items like columns, parasols, paper lanterns and such are available in many different colors.

Actually, yellow is a color that was very popular in ancient China. There are 5 colors in the culture that symbolize the 5 elements or nature. Using a combination of 1 to 5 of these colors would definitely be different for an Asian themed event.

3. Italian Theme for Prom: Venice - Rome - Tuscany

Venice, Rome, Tuscany... These are Italian themes with their own little twists.

Venice has canals and gondolas, Rome has ancient ruins and statues, Tuscany with its hills, beautiful villas and quaint cafes -- any and all celebrate Italy.

For a Tuscany theme, use murals depicting the rolling hills, villas and town scenes.

Borrow black, wrought iron cafe tables and chairs to create a "cafe" vignette or scene. Use red and white gingham table covers or cafe umbrella. Add geraniums, grapes and ivy as accents. Tuscany is about nature and natural elements. Gardens are a big deal. Create a garden area with faux stone walls, fountains and statues.

At the library, find coffee table books with photos of the Tuscany region and duplicate what you can. Instead of a kit theme, get individual items you can put together to create your own Tuscan theme.
