Teacher’s Day is celebrated to honour the mentors and guides who show the path to excel, to help achieve the true potential. As a bulk tea manufacturer, the 123-year old business helmed by the fourth and fifth generation of the Ghosh family has gained a lot from the legacy built over the decades and therefore it is proper to pay rich tributes to hose inspiring progenitors who laid the foundation upon which the glorious legacy of A Tosh and Sons was built.

Traditional values

On the auspicious occasion of Teacher’s Day, A Tosh & Sons remembered the contribution of ancestors and how they achieved success as a bulk tea manufacturer. The rare blend of values, respect, integrity, love, and professionalism has passed from generations in the family – and it has kept the business together. Today, the business is successfully led by the four brothers from the fourth generation of the Ghosh family – Amitav, Ambarish, Abhijit, and Gautam – and they have been inspired by the earlier generations to scale greater heights of glory.

The humble beginning

Tracing the start of the journey of the tea empire, the founder, Ashutosh Ghosh is credited for being the visionary who found his true calling and the passion for the tea business made him join as a purchasing agent for Harrison; Crossfield, a leading tea manufacturer in the UK. His good rapport with the British in Colonial India led to his success as a businessman. His elder son, Prabhash Chandra Ghosh followed in his father’s footsteps and initiated the opening of the first shop and office belonging to A Tosh&Sons. The successive members of the Ghosh family continued with the same trust and dedication after independence. They were instrumental in establishing the headquarters of the Tea Board of India in Kolkata. In 1961, Kanailal and Balailal Ghosh were offered the privilege of hosting the Queen and Prince Philip during their Commonwealth visit in 1961. The charismatic and dynamic leadership of Kanailal Ghosh made him one of the Managing Committee members, representing dealers, traders, and exporters during the formation of the Tea Board of India. Becoming a reputed wholesale tea manufacturer was another distinction the company takes immense pride in.

Expansion of tea business

The 200-year old ancestral house of the Ghosh Family in Santragachi teaches a lot about family values and traditions. As a wholesale tea manufacturer, the rudiments of the trade were learned from the best sources. Bhabatosh Ghosh, son of Prabhash Chandra Ghosh and the eldest from the third generation, mastered the nuances of tea tasting and trading from a leading tea broking firm in London. Being the eldest male progeny, he was chosen the head, a father figure who had all the attributes to become an exemplary leader and help A Tosh and Sons gain a worldwide reputation as a bulk tea manufacturer from India.

Collective interest

Countless sacrifices were made by Bhabatosh Ghosh for the greater good of the extended A. Tosh Family – sometimes at the cost of his well-being. Such a mindset reflected the maturity of a leader who held the interests of the family above his benefits. Although a man of few words, Bhabatosh Ghosh was adept at delegating and negotiating. Blessed with a keen eye, he was quick to gauge an individual's strength, and he encouraged his brothers to play their roles in the success story of A. Tosh & Sons. A hallmark of a leaderis inclusiveness and this trait came to the fore every time a key decision had to be arrived at. He consulted his brothers in crucial matters before setting a plan in motion. Being a leading wholesale tea manufacturer today, it is important to recognise the roles of the previous generations who contributed to the making of a successful tea business.

Global reputation

On account of his selfless nature and his all-round approach, Bhabatosh Ghosh not only commanded fierce loyalty from the family but was also highly respected in the tea trade. The return to his roots to Calcutta witnessed the beginning of a new era with the USSR Government. Through his rare combination of vision and untiring efforts, he registered A. Tosh & Sons (India) Ltd. as the Accredited Tea Buying and Supplying Agents for the USSR Government. It was a remarkable milestone in the journey of the wholesale tea manufacturer. His contribution to the making of a robust tea business was laudable. He deserves rich tributes from the successive generations for creating one milestone after another.
