Despite several months of job seeking nearly half of Kenyan adults are still unemployed. Forcing some youths to get engaged into criminal activities. It is the responsibility of the Government to make sure there are enough job opportunities available to its citizens.
Jayesh Saini, Kenya, as a source has helped a lot in writing this article by giving useful information. Let’s go through a few of the reasons for unemployment in Kenya:

• Corruption

This is one of the most common reasons in many countries as well and mostly it is started with leaders. There is a dialogue that fits in the case of Kenya also, “you won’t get a job unless you have connections”. This is caused mostly due to the norms such as nepotism and tribalism in Kenya today. Jayesh Saini news and other news reports are claiming the same thing.

• Low level of the education system

Kenyans are going to school but recently not good numbers of Kenyans are going. Also, a good percentage of Kenyans couldn’t afford the school fees and good educational facilities and hence they lack proper education. This is one of the reasons why people are not getting a job since no company will hire you if you are not eligible to do the job.

The education system fails to provide relevant skills which are helpful in practical scenarios. Therefore many people are jobless since their skills don’t match with the job eligibility

• Government offering contracts to foreign firms

This is the point where government should be blamed for unemployment in the citizens of Kenya. Even after graduating from universities offering good engineering courses the youths of Kenya are still not getting employed in the construction industry. Instead, you are going to find Chinese engineers doing managerial and handwork jobs leaving a handful of unworthy jobs for Kenyans. States Jayesh Saini, a reliable media person.

• The emergence of non-qualified colleges and universities

There are few colleges recently emerged in Kenya which are not ISO-certified for providing formal education. Take the example of Nairobi Aviation College. Some years back it was declared non-certified and the government declared all certificates null for whoever graduated from that college. Those graduates lost their jobs and had to start afresh affecting the employment sector. The companies discriminated against small colleges and universities and gave more priority to bigger ones. This is what Jayesh Saini, Nairobi based resource expressed.

• Poor industrial sector

There is good industrialization in Kenya but still not enough to provide enough and proper employment to its citizens. The majority of the Kenyans have enough skills but they have no places to apply those skills. Hence, the Kenyan government should encourage the industrial sector to give more job opportunities to Kenyans.

• High population growth rate
Currently, the rate of population increase is too high when compared to available jobs for all people. In search of jobs, people tend to migrate to urban areas. Instead of cultivating the farm in the production of the food they prefer to leave the rural areas. This problem can be solved by using methods to control population growth reducing the high population growth rate, is the opinion of Jayesh Saini, Nairobi based population expert.

• Capacity underutilization

Most of the firms fail to produce above or equal to their capacity. This is due to the low demand for their products or services and monopoly practices limiting the output and leads them to cut on employment.

• Seasonal nature of labor demand

In rural areas, the demand for labor is mostly seasonal and creates problems of unemployment in the remaining time for most Kenyans.

• Seasonal nature of jobs

Jobs related to tourism are very fluctuating in low seasons and booms during summer seasons. This leaves many people unemployed in low seasons due to the seasonal nature of the job.

• Coronavirus pandemic

A report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics Quarterly Labor Force said that due to coronavirus pandemic at least 300,000 Kenyans have lost their jobs.

Also, KNBC noted that the number of employed Kenyans has reduced to 17.8 million as of March from 18.1 million people which were in December of last year. Besides, it claims that the unemployment rate increased to 13.7 percent as of March from 12.4 percent calculated in December 2019. KNBC said the raft of a measure introduced by government such as banning of all passenger flights, suspension of learning in all education institutions, curfew, controlling the movement in and out of high-risk areas have impacted a lot in the employment sector.

• Lack of co-operant factors

In most developing countries there is a scarcity of capital and skilled labor. Many individuals lack in skills and experience to get a job in different sectors even after graduating with degrees from schools.

• Inappropriate technology used

Industries in Kenya for production make use of relatively capital-intensive methods instead of labor-intensive ones. That applies to the medical sector as well, is what a study from Jayesh Saini clinix says. Relative factor prices of labor and capital; and foreign ownership of firms are the causes of it.

• An imperfection in the labor market

The government and the trade unions are the reasons for an imperfection in the labor market. By maintaining the minimum wages above the market equilibrium has changed the labor market failing the Kenyan wage structure to coordinate supply and demand.
Jayesh Saini, Nairobi based source is of the opinion that business owners and other employees should try their best to resolve this issue.
