Columbus, Ohio—31, May- 2023 Somali Community Link is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and empowering the Somali refugee community. The organization has recently launched an English language program for Somali refugees in Central Ohio. This initiative addresses the language barriers that slow the refugees’ integration into the local community and open up new opportunities.
Language proficiency plays an important role in successfully resetting and integrating refugees. By providing English language classes, Somali Community Link equips Somali refugees with the skills they need to access education, communicate effectively, gain employment, and participate in the wider community.
The English language initiative by Somali Community Link is designed to help refugees of varying proficiency levels, from beginners to advanced learners. Talking about the English language classes, a representative of the organization stated, "We understand that language can be a major barrier for Somali refugees when trying to rebuild their lives in a foreign country. Just by getting a better grasp on English, they not only communicate effectively but are also able to navigate their housing and employment issues more successfully."
