Covid-19: What to Look for and How to Act?

COVID is going to stick around for some time. What should you be looking out for?

As of May 8, California started to move to Phase 2 which included re-opening of retail stores, manufactures, and other locations that meet the specific criteria. Even though the soft opening is in place, people are strongly encouraged to stay at home because despite moving on to Phase 2 opening, the United States did not show any flattening of the coronavirus case curve.

This means the situation is not getting any better for the time being.

Especially with the increased purchase in thermometer ever since the start of the pandemic, it is important to know how to recognize symptoms and how to act when suspected of coronavirus. There are times when reading a thermometer can be confusing in terms of what number to look out for and how to determine if a suspected infection is there. At the same time, it is important to remind ourselves that seeing a temperature slightly above 98.6°F is not an indication to start panicking right away. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines fever as having a temperature of 100.4 F or greater or feel very warm to touch along with other signs such as weakness, chills, and other cold like symptoms.

How do you know if you have a fever?

When people see a temperature of slightly above 98.6 °F, it is possible to easily let panic sink in so it is important to know what to look for and how to act accordingly.

Do not only focus on the number but remember to assess your current health condition. Are you feeling fine? Do you have cold/flu like symptoms?
Temperature can be affected by various factors: dehydration, menstrual cycle, drinking alcohol, physical activities, time of the day, and much more.
Fever does not always mean coronavirus because there are also illnesses that can induce fever such as the flu.
If one is still worried about the raised temperature, doctors recommend taking the temperature twice a day for several days, making sure that two measurements are done at different times of the day. Monitor yourself to see there is any worsening of signs and symptoms.

Is taking Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, or Aleve for fever dangerous?

Despite rumors going around, stating that ibuprofen can make the symptoms of coronavirus worse, there is currently no established connection between ibuprofen and coronavirus. World Health Organization (WHO) made an announcement on March 18 letting people know that WHO does not support the claim stating ibuprofen is unsafe for coronavirus. In fact, CDC also does not have any support showing ibuprofen causing coronavirus complications.

When patients are prescribed ibuprofen from their doctors, it is important to take the medication as directed and not to ignore the treatment. Since there is no linked proof between ibuprofen and the virus, the medication should not cause fear for patients who need to take them for various reasons.

Now that you know what to check for, how do you act if you strongly believe that there is a suspected coronavirus?

As of now, California health officials are making all COVID-19 testing to be free and this includes people who have insurance plans and people who don’t have health coverage. At the same time, immigration status will not stop a person from getting tested as well. But, this does not mean you can get tested at your convenience because certain qualifications have to be met.

For drive-through testing sites, an online appointment needs to be made. The online appointment also needs to be approved.
LA County: There will be questions regarding signs and symptoms on the eligibility form.
City of LA: Symptoms of the virus is not needed to make an appointment.
Again, getting screened online and making an appointment is a requirement to get a test. Or, getting a directive from a health care provider is another option. If you do not have a primary care physician, you can call 211 and the officials can direct you to nearby clinicians.
Per L.A Public Health Officials, people are advised not to call 911 or seek help in the emergency room unless severe symptoms are experienced such as having trouble breathing and chest pains.
People who need immediate medical attention should not try to make an appointment for screening and should go straight to emergency care or call 911.

With situations changing every day and constant updates coming from health officials, the public needs to be aware of this accurate information to be safe and not to fall into a panic state. During the times of pandemic, working together to prevent the spreading of misinformation while learning about proper ways to take care of oneself.
