Finding the best internet providers near you could be overwhelming, especially if you live in a densely-populated area with lots of companies competing for your business. But living in a rural area also has its challenges, as your options for internet may be few. Whatever your situation, it is possible to find the right company for you when you follow a few simple steps.

First and foremost, knowing what you need in an internet company is crucial. Ask yourself about your internet habits. Do you only go online to check email once in awhile, or are you an avid surfer who spends several hours a week on the internet? An occasional internet user may not require the highest speed, where a slower speed can end up frustrating a frequent user. Knowing your habits will also affect the cost for your service, as slower internet speeds can often cost less than faster speeds.

The next thing to consider is what kind of equipment will be required in order for you to receive internet. For example, cable and DSL internet both require a modem to be installed. If you need a connection for your laptop, you may be able to purchase a mobile internet 'stick'. Satellite internet will require a dish and satellite receiver in order to work.

Asking the people you know about how they like their service can give you some valuable insight. However, keep in mind that everyone's internet needs are different, and so a company that may work very well for your friend or neighbour may not necessarily be what you need or can afford.

Understand that, depending on your location, you may not be able to access land-based internet types like cable and DSL. For example, those living in the country are often limited to the internet types they can get because the cost of running cable or DSL lines to rural homes is currently very expensive and difficult for internet companies to accomplish.
