1. Take your time and stitch slowly.
2. Use a lighter weight thread in your bobbin.
3. To avoid skipped stitches, use a ball point needle.
4. If you are not happy with your stitch coverage, consider sewing with two threads.
5. An easy way to reduce bulk is to trim away excess seam allowance from one side of the seam.
6. The trick to sewing a straight line is to keep your fabric aligned with one of those little lines on the plate under the needle on your machine at all times.
