Watchdog Fines Firm for making 146m Illegal PPI Calls

According to ICO, many customers felt threatened and harassed because of the automated calls from the firm and these were made for more than a four-month period.

 
Northampton, England – 4th October, 2017

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has fined a firm £350,000 for making 146 million illegal calls regarding Payment Protection Insurance (PPI).
According to ICO, many customers felt threatened and harassed because of the automated calls from the firm and these were made for more than a four-month period. The watchdog said that the firm was held responsible for making the highest volume of illegal calls and this is what resulted into an ICO penalty to date.
A firm has the liberty to make automated marketing calls to its customers only if they have the customers’ consent, which the firm didn’t have. The company also broke the rules and regulations by not including its name and contact number in their already recorded message.
After the ICO’s investigation regarding illegal calls, the director of the company is trying to dissolve the firm. Information Commissioner’s Office is not only dedicated towards recuperating the penalty amount, but also working with insolvency specialists and liquidator if the firm goes bankrupt.
As per a Spokesperson, “ICO has been investigating on illegal PPI calls on behalf the British people and feels that these calls are a scourge on the society, which takes no notice of its people’s right to wish for peaceful environment in their respective homes.”
He further added, “People often find these recorded messages to be specifically disturbing, as they are not able to talk to the agent. The firm making illegal calls must have known that laws regarding automated calls are stringent as compared to other marketing calls.”
