Protective gear is a must when you are learning to roller skate. Helmet, wrist guards and knee pads are important. The protective gear allows the student and the coach to focus on the skills without the fear of bumps and bruises,in case of a fall.

While your coach or instructor will teach you how to save yourself, falls are unexpected, especially if you’re a beginner.

The most common unexpected falls, when you are a new skater, can be –
• Forward falls –hurting your knees, elbows, hands and forehead
• Backward falls –hurting your wrists, elbows, bottom and back of the head

The injuries from these falls can range from minor bruises, to broken bones. And you can drastically minimize the risk of serious injury with protective gear, like a helmet, wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads.

Helmets
Helmets protect you from hitting your head in an unexpected backward or forward fall. Some helmets are rated for multiple impact. These are good because they can take minor hits without the need for replacement. You can also ask for recommendations at an online sports shop about which helmets are good for beginners. Remember that your bike helmet may not be rated for multiple impact you will need to replace it if it hits the pavement.

Wrist Guards
When we fall, we instinctively try to put your hands in front or behind to break the fall and reduce injury. The wrists consist of small, delicate bones that may break due impact and/or due to the body weight while trying to support the falling body. Fortunately, wrist guards comprise of a splint on the top and bottom that can absorb impact and limit injury.

Wrist guards are also available in a “pack” of protective gear, along with knee pads or other protective equipment. Don’t forget to check the size of all your protective gear carefully. If the gear sizing is not right for you, it may not be much help in protecting you from potential injuries.

Knee Pads
In the initial lessons, your instructor will teach you to safely fall on your knees if you feel out of control or off-balance. Knee pads can protect your knees, in case you experience a fall.

Knee pads are available in a variety of styles and thicknesses. Some skaters pick the thickest and softest knee pads. But it’s best to ask the online store or your instructor for recommendations.

Elbow Pads
Elbow pads are needed for added safety. If the elbows impact the ground in a forward or backward fall, it can lead to breaks, scrapes or burns. So, it’s a good idea to wear elbow pads when you are skating.
