Concerns surrounding Colorado edibles on the rise in Q1 2023.

New research has raised concerns regarding Colorado edibles in 2023, after a 2019 report showed that ninety-seven children aged five or younger were unintentionally exposed to marijuana through edibles. Numerous children have ingested marijuana despite the Colorado regulations to ensure edibles are kept out of children hands. There is no plans to visit these rules this year.

By 2021, the younger children age group made up almost half of all marijuana exposures. This is due to the cannabis being inhaled, absorbed through the skin, or ingested. Children were most often accidentally exposed to edibles, including gummies, cookies, drinks and other beverages that were infused with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and not through smoke inhalation.

Marijuana exposure among younger children has increased nationwide with Colorado being at the forefront of this trend. There are no uniform protocols in place and Colorado health officials haven't conveyed plans to revise their regulations to prevent the risk of children ingesting edibles. The laws and regulations surrounding marijuana are regularly revisited and evaluated by law makers, agencies and stakeholders. A priority right now is to prevent youth access.

Nate Balducci, the Marketing Director at Rocky Mountain Cannabis in Colorado, said “Cannabis was legalized for recreational use in 2014 and since then Colorado has implemented numerous directives to stop the risk of children consuming these products. This included reducing the risk of edibles being seen as sweets. At Rocky Mountain Cannabis we ensure our edibles are hand selected to meet Colorado regulations. Our edibles do not look like fruit, humans or animals. They are sold in child-resistant packaging and do not have candies or candy on the labels. Our advertising does not include cartoon characters or anything that will appeal to children. It is a serious concern that children of such a young age are being accidentally introduced and we believe by meeting regulations and taking relevant safety steps, we can reduce this from continuing in the future.”

In order to reduce the risk of youths accessing Colorado edibles, it's recommended that parents take the necessary steps, including storing any marijuana in a locked area, keeping edibles in child resistant packaging and not using marijuana around their children. Public Health officials have launched a number of educational campaigns to target parents and adults that influence children.
