Simon Cooper is on a mission to make your standard plastic toothbrush a smarter, hygienic and eco-friendlier tool.

Toothbrushes have changed slightly over the years from chew sticks, tree twigs, bird feathers, animal bones, porcupine quills, and of course, electric. However, Simon Cooper is on a mission to make your standard plastic toothbrush a smarter, hygienic and eco-friendlier tool.

“First of all, all these grooves and ridges get filled up with toothpaste, saliva and, yup, you guessed it, bacteria. Secondly, I can never remember how long 3 months has been. So I feel like I am always using a dirty old toothbrush to try and clean my teeth.“

Cooper makes a strong argument that our toothbrushes harvest and collect unwanted filth. If you think about it, this dirt enters our mouths each and every time we brush our teeth. Not great for our teeth or our overall health so he’s got a valid point.

In early 2016, Simon recruited Ryan Day, an Industrial Designer from Toronto. Over the months they started to produce complex designs for the grin toothbrush, finally simplifying it to the core essentials – a sleek, anodized aluminium handle that comes with replaceable brush heads. Copper and Day have created the term toothbrush technology with the grin toothbrush system.

Simon Cooper justly points out that 3.5 billion toothbrushes are disposed every year and almost every single toothbrush produced since 1938 is still in our landfills and oceans. “So I created Grin. It’s a smarter and better designed toothbrush.”

“The final grin design is more hygienic and way more convenient than your standard disposable toothbrush,” he says. “Nobody enjoys buying a toothbrush, so why not have it arrive in the mail and, at the same time, remind you that it's time to replace your old one?”
