Dubai, UAE (April 05, 2017):- Mental health awareness in Dubai was at an all-time low before 2008, with a lack of proper facilities and trained personnel to attend to patients. This changed ever since Dr. Yousef Abu Allaban, the Chief Executive Officer founded the American Center for Psychiatry and Neurology in Abu Dhabi. This was followed by the opening of centers in two other cities.

“The effort to establish the awareness is quite immense. Mental health problems weren’t looked at as disorders until quite recently in the history of medicine”, stated Dr. Yousef, when asked about how difficult the journey has been. “It was never going to be an easy task. We knew that from the very beginning”, he continued.

There are different facets to mental health disorders. The process of treating children and adults tend to completely different and far apart from each other in most respects. “We employ different specialists for different treatments. Once they have passed a strenuous screening procedure, they are allowed to treat patients. This is irrespective of whether the problem is psychiatric of neurological”, says Dr. Yousef.

When asked about his future plans, he was slightly dismissive, “We are in the process of expanding our influence on various other cities. Before that, however, we shall be conducting various outreach programs. This will help increase the awareness on mental health in remote parts of the country. Our patients’ feedbacks are very important to us.”
