Structure of schooling in Queensland

Schooling in Queensland starts with Prep or preparatory year followed by 12 years of primary and secondary school.
Over the 13 years of schooling, the education will be mainly focused on the following learning areas:

• Mathematics
• Studies of environment and society
• Science
• Technology
• Arts
• Health and Physical Education
• Personal development
• Languages other than English (ESL)

Prep Year

The Preparatory or prep year is a 1-year program pursued by the students in the year before they start primary school. During this part of education, students are encouraged to engage in all five senses to form a solid foundation in skills like motor, literacy, social and numeracy. Primary School

The primary school is all about embarking on a journey and forming foundational skills based on the curriculum. Primary school is from Year 1 till 6.

Secondary School

Secondary school or high school is the final schooling period and adheres to compulsory education for the students in Queensland. The secondary education is from years 7 to 10. The senior years of education are from years 11 to 12 which is significant for the students who wish to pursue further studies or progress to university.
