MS Dhoni is one of those cricketers who know how to be in the limelight. While his records and calibre speak for him, it is not unknown that he has been out of the action ever since India lost to New Zealand in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

However, the upcoming Indian Premier League was about to play the key role for him as many said his performance will decide whether he will be in the T20 World Cup squad or not.

Recently, Venkatapathy Raju, who became a part of the national selection committee headed by DilipVengsarkar told Sportstar about how they picked up MS Dhoni and his cricketing career.

“Well, the guiding principle of the panel was simple - only consistent performers and match-winners will be considered for selection. We could do this because we watched most of the matches with focus on certain fringe players, who could go on to play for India. This is where the India-A series

concept really helped us,” he admits.

He further said that there were reasons for giving him the captaincy. At that time, the seniors came after a long break so they thought it would be better to give him the captaincy.

However, he thinks every player has to keep performing – be it domestic, India-A series or any other competitive cricket. This is to prove to yourself, not to others.

“Playing international cricket is never easy. It demands a different level of fitness and skills. For that, you have to be in the thick of it. I remember how I struggled coming back into Indian team after a three-year gap because of the totally different kind of intensive training in the Indian team as compared to playing Ranji or other first-class tournaments,” he signed off.
