[Singapore, September 18, 2015] - SAF Volunteer Corps, a branch of Singapore’s Ministry of Defence, provides training services for SAFVC volunteer trainees, namely Basic Training, Qualification Training and Advanced Training. As the trainee’s skills and proficiencies advance, they will proceed to the next module.

Three key considerations will guide the design of training for the SAFVC, such as safety, realism and stewardship. Training pedagogies will enhance effectiveness and enable SAFVC to achieve the instructional goals and intent.

Basic Training

A common module for all SAFV trainees, Basic Training aims to provide understanding and appreciation of the military ethos and SAF values. For this training, volunteers will learn basic soldiering skills and knowledge, trained to fire the Singapore Assault Rifle 21 (SAR21) and learn to adapt to the environment. Basic training is a two-week stay-in programme that will culminate in a field camp.

Qualification Training

All volunteer trainees will undergo Qualification Training after Basic Training. Conducted by their respective SAF formations, this five-day stay-in programme is designed to teach volunteers the necessary skills and knowledge to perform in their designated role. For example, volunteers who choose to be a military nurse will undergo training at the SAF Medical Training Institute.

Volunteers will be promoted from SV to SV1 upon the culmination of the training, indicating that they are equipped to serve in a uniformed capacity.

Advanced Training

Roles, such as Auxiliary Security Trooper, Bridge Watchkeeper and Deck Operator (Seamanship) require more vigorous training. To acquire the required proficiencies, SAFVC volunteers will undergo Advanced Training, where they will have specialised and additional training in the fields of weapons handling, marksmanship and Rules of Engagement and Military Police Close Combat Training. This final module is a five-day programme that will take up to five days.

The organisation encourages the public to take part in maintaining peace and order by enlisting in the organisation. They set requirements for application, including age, citizenship status and physical health condition. Upon qualifying, volunteers may begin Basic Training.
