Posted December 22, 2015 by RichardKim

To help strengthen national defence and support national service, Singaporeans, permanent residents and naturalized citizens are welcome to join the Singapore Armed Forces Volunteer Corps (SAFVC).

[Singapore, 12/22/2015] - The Singapore Armed Forces Volunteer Corps (SAFVC) is a uniformed scheme that gives Singaporeans and permanent residents an opportunity to take part in national defence and service. Anyone is welcome to join as long as he or she meets the entry qualifications and passes the necessary exams and interview. Applicants who qualify and pass the assessments will then undergo training and deployment. There is a variety of roles across the Army, Navy and Air Force available for volunteers.

Qualifications to Join

• Citizenship Status ─ First generation permanent residents and new citizens are eligible to join the Singapore Armed Forces Volunteer Corps.
• Gender ─ Males and females are welcome to apply.
• Age ─ Applicants must be between 18 to 45 years of age to qualify for training.

Assessment Procedure

Applicants who meet the requirements mentioned above will then qualify to undergo an assessment. The assessment includes an interview and a medical screening to assess their medical status and overall aptitude to undergo training and deployment.

For Singaporeans and Singapore permanent residents who have had National Service commitments and would want to extend their voluntary service to the SAFVC, they may apply for the Reservist on Voluntary Extended Reserve Service (ROVERS) Scheme.

Roles to Match Individual Skills and Interests

The SAFVC has introduced a wide range of roles in nine categories in the Army, Navy and Air Force. The medical screening and the overall assessed aptitude will determine the assignment of volunteers. For the volunteers to serve meaningfully, the assignment program ensures that each volunteer’s role matches his or her individual skill and interest.

For instance, volunteers who have a passion for the arts, photography, videography and writing may join the InfoMedia staff to support communication efforts such as event publicity and media management. Volunteers who have degrees in Psychology and working experience as psychologists may assist in the development and implementation of Defence capabilities in the SAF.

The SAFVC program aims to promote the importance of national service in strengthening the nation’s defence and security. Through the SAFVC’s progressive training program, volunteers will become stronger and more resilient. Volunteers will also gain invaluable skills and experiences that they can benefit from in the future.
