New York, NY 15th June: Rebecca School, a therapeutic day school for children of ages 4-21 with neurodevelopmental disorders of relating and communicating including ASD, recently took students from the Rebecca School Comic Book Club on a field trip to 4KMedia. According to a post on their website, the students were offered a wide range of engaging experiences at the 4KMedia offices.
Rebecca School is an autistic children school with an academic curriculum based upon the DIR or Developmental, Individual-Differences, Relationship-based model developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan. According to this model, emotionally meaningful interactions form the foundation of learning for all children. This model and its ensuing therapeutic methods are integrated into the academic approach at Rebecca School, helping children on the autism spectrum to relate, communicate and think.
4KMedia is an American production company currently dedicated to the licensing, sales and distribution of the Yu-Gi-Oh! brand in the United States. Yu-Gi-Oh! is a Japanese comic book series about gaming. The Rebecca School Comic Book Club and the Rebecca School staff that accompanied them were greeted by Yu-Gi-Oh! inspired chalk murals, posters, framed cards, toys and videos on their entrance to the 4KMedia offices.
Children from the acclaimed autism school got the opportunity to interact with ‘Ghostbuster Chris’, during the field trip. 'Ghostbuster Chris' also made and offered gift bags to every student containing a DVD of Yu-Gi-Oh!, two packs of playing cards, a paper craft toy and an exclusive pendant made on a 3D printer.
As a surprise towards the end of the field trip, the Rebecca School Comic Club students were invited by 4KMedia producer Shane into a recording booth to have their voices recorded for an upcoming episode of the latest cartoon series: Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. The students will be heard as a cheering crowd in the series.
Rebecca School opened its doors in September, 2006, after the founder of the school, made the observation that children diagnosed with autism were not being offered appropriate educational intervention therapies in New York. Located at 40 East 30th Street in New York City, the schools employs a dedicated team of teachers, assistant teachers, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, psychologists, music therapists, social workers, an adaptive physical education teacher and a full-time nurse. Innovative methods such as music therapy sessions aligned with the DIR model approach form the unique therapeutic-academic curricula at this autism school.
