A sailor’s job is to lead the way on the ocean as the ship goes from port to port. The only person capable of doing that is the one blessed with the knowledge of Nautical science. Any Nautical science graduate is capable of navigating the ship, its stability, handling, cargo, meteorology and more. Nautical science open doors for compelling career choices like Merchant Navy, which is a very fascinating career choice. The IMI spokesperson said, “Experienced Mariners are in great demand now for various shore assignments due to their ability to handle a multitude of jobs, their resourcefulness, sense of responsibility and ability to work under most challenging circumstances”.

The major job opportunities come in form of a marine engineer or navigation officer on a merchant navy ship. To become a navigation officer a candidate, need to go for a three-year BSc nautical science colleges in India approved by the DGS. On the other hand, to land the job of a marine engineer, one needs to take roots in a four-year engineering course. However, only the candidates who have cleared their 12th standard with subjects of Physics, chemistry, mathematics, and English with good marks are eligible to appear in the entrance examination. The hard-core enthusiast can get a speedy diploma in nautical science, colleges will provide with the education, and they can directly go for their training as deck cadets.

After completing the Bachelor’s degree, a candidate unlocks his potential of becoming a Navigating officer. But initially, you will join the ship as a deck cadet to compete for your training tenure of 8 to 9 months, where you will build your craft under supervision. As you start your job, continuous learning and hard work will help you climb the corporate ladder to ultimately become the ship, Captain. One needs to have a clean record and pass an examination before becoming a full-fledged captain. Marine engineers can land on jobs like chief engineer, polyvalent officer and more.

As for the employment part, the ocean is infinite and so are possibilities. A number of shipping companies hire mariners from all over India. Companies like Wallem ship management, United ocean Ship Management, Apeejay Shipping, Herald Maritime Services and more are always demanding more deck professionals.
