A humble beginning through ‘Manassinakkare’

Nayanthara was born as the younger daughter of Air Force official Kurian Kodiyattu and Omana Kurian who hail from a reputed ancestral family Kodiyatt in Thiruvalla, Kerala. Parents named Nayanthara as ‘Diana Mariam Kurien‘, and it was Sathyan Anthikkadu, a Malayalam filmmaker who selected the name ‘Nayanthara’ for the actress. Young Diana studied in various parts of India due to the job nature of her father.

During her childhood, Nayanthara was just an above average student, and she was also active in extra curricular activities. Now, she holds a BA degree in English Literature.Nayanthara entered the film Industry in the most unexpected manner. It was during her college days. Young Nayan, an 18 year old girl was doing her graduation in Marthoma College during that time. Nayanthara used to do small scale modeling assignments then, and it caught the attention of Sathyan Anthikkadu, one of the most popular filmmakers in Malayalam Industry.

After some days, Sathyan Anthikkadu approached her to do the lead role in his new movie ‘Manassinakkare’ which had Jayaram in the lead role. Initially, the actress turned down the offer, as she did not wish to pursue acting career. But due to heavy compulsion, she gave a positive nod for the movie. Later, in an interview, Nayanthara revealed that she wished to stop acting soon after completing ‘Manassinakkare’, as she wished to pursue a different career.

‘Manassinakkare’ emerged a huge hit in the Box Office, and it fetched more and more offers to Nayanthara from big production banners in Mollywood. From this juncture starts the dream run of Nayanthara, one of the most beautiful ladies whom South Indian Film Industry has ever witnessed.

Emerging as a top star in Mollywood

The success of ‘Manassinakkare’ made Nayanthara a top name in Mollywood. In 2004, she acted in two movies alongside Mohanlal, ‘Natturajavu’ and ‘Vismayathumbathu’. Vismayathumbathu was directed by Fazil, and through her stellar performance in this psychological thriller, she fetched positive reviews from both critics and audiences.

A grand entry to Kollywood with Supreme Star, and later with Superstar

Nayanthara made her grand entry to Kollywood through the movie ‘Ayya‘ which was directed by Hari, the master craftsman of mass movies. The film had Sarath Kumar in the lead role, and upon its release, the flick was well received by audiences. In the movie, Nayanthara portrayed the role of a traditional innocent village girl, and it captured the hearts of Tamil audiences from the inner core.Later, she was roped to play the role of Rajinikanth’s love interest in ‘Chandramukhi‘. As we all know, ‘Chandramukhi’ emerged as one of the biggest hits in Tamil Film History and it ran for more than 800 days in theaters. Success of ‘Chandramukhi’ enhanced the star power of Nayanthara too, and it catalyzed her journey to the league of top brass heroines in the industry.

After the success of ‘Ayya’ and ‘Chandramukhi’, Nayanthara told that she is overwhelmed and humbled by the affection shown by the Tamil audience.
Entering the world of glamor and seduction through Ghajini and Billa
Ghajini, the movie directed by A R Murugadoss was one of the biggest hits in 2005. The film had Suriya and Asin in the lead roles, while Nayanthara played another prominent role in the flick. This film had an item number, ‘X Machi’, and it was a popular track during those days. In the song, Nayanthara was seen in an ultra glamorous avatar. Later, Nayanthara revealed that it was her mistake to appear in Ghajini, and she called it as a worst decision.

Nayanthara again appeared in an ultra seductive role in the movie ‘Billa‘ which had Ajith Kumar in the lead role. The bikini scenes of Nayanthara in the film tickled the spines of many, and her glamor show played a crucial role in determining the success of the movie in theaters.

Some of the other noted films which she acted in this time span includes, ‘Thaskara Veeran’, ‘Rappakal’, ‘Sivakasi’, ‘Kalvanin Kadhali’, ‘Vallavan’, ‘Thalaivan’, ‘E’ and ‘Yogi’. Her kissing scenes in Vallavan stirred up many rumors, and during this time, she started developing a romantic relationship with Silambarasan, but later the duo broke up.

“If the script demands a kissing scene, I think there is nothing wrong. I only object to the kiss being inserted for the purpose of titillation. In Vallavan, I am working with Simbu who is very passionate about films. The scene in question gels well with the story and does not seem out of place”, told Nayanthara when controversies aroused as a result of her intimate scenes in Vallavan. This shows the maturity level of the actress and the passion towards cinema.

In 2006, she made her debut in Tollywood through the Venkatesh starrer ‘Lakshmi’. The film was a huge success in theaters, and it was later dubbed to Tamil and Malayalam.

In 2007, she appeared alongside Rajinikanth again in ‘Balleilakka‘ song in ‘Sivaji: The boss’, and it was an astounding chart buster.

An Unlucky 2008

By 2008, Nayanthara has proclaimed her mettle, and she was one of the most demanded young heroines in South India. Her first release in 2008 was ‘Yaaredi Nee Mohini‘ alongside Dhanush. Nayanthara enacted the role of an elegant corporate employee in this flick, and it emerged as a mammoth blockbuster in the Box Office. But her later releases, ‘Kuselan’, ‘Sathyam’ and ‘Aegan’ bombed in Box Office. Her Malayalam flick ‘Twenty Twenty’ was a huge hit, but the actress appeared in a cameo role in that movie.

Unfortunate fate in Box Office haunted the career of Nayanthara as her later movies which include, ‘Villu’, ‘Aadhavan’ etc bombed in theaters. From then, she took a small gap from Kollywood and during this span, she concentrated more on cameo roles. Romantic controversies between Nayanthara and Prabhu Deva became the hottest talking topic in the Gossip columns during this time. This relation reached the doorsteps of marriage, but the duo broke up due to unknown reasons.

Flying high like a phoenix bird after three years hiatus

Atlee’s ‘Raja Rani‘ was released in 2013, and it is touted to be the comeback film of Nayanthara to Kollywood after a gap of three years. After her comeback, she revealed that it is sheer dedication and hard work which played a crucial role behind her success. She also wished to stay blessed always, and loves to stay honest in deeds.

In 2014 and 2015, Nayanthara delivered some huge hits Kollywood and Mollywood which includes, ‘Anaamika’, ‘Bhaskar The Rascal’, ‘Thani Oruvan’, ‘Maya’ and ‘Naanum Rowdydhaan‘. In ‘Maya’, there are no big stars in the cast, and it was just the name of Nayanthara and brilliant making which helped the movie to emerge as a money spinner.

Promising ventures on the way

She is sticking to this point, as the actress has signed ‘Puthiya Niyamam’ with Mammootty in the lead role. Her other future projects include, ‘Idhu Namma Aalu’, ‘Thirunaal’ and ‘Kashmora’.
