A double-barrel shotgun is either an over under or a side by side shotgun for hunting or sporting purposes. Double barrel shotguns are excellent for hunting birds and other animals and shooting clays. But what a lot of new shooters want to know is what makes an over under and a side by side shotgun different.

1 – Barrel alignment: Shotguns with two barrels set alongside each other are referred to as "side by side double-barreled shotguns" because of this placement of the barrels. Similar to a double-barreled break-action shotgun, an over under shotgun has its barrels stacked one on top of the other.

Some will have two triggers, while others will only have one trigger with a switch that lets you choose which barrel will fire, allowing you to choose between double and single rounds.

2 - Sight planes: What do you see when you hold a side by side up to your shoulder and peer down it? Two barrels. It is referred to as a "wide site plane." Some gunmen find it annoying. Over under shotguns feature "single sight planes" because one barrel is stacked on top of the other. This explains why some shoot them better than others, especially at targets.

3 – How they feel to hold- The barrels of a side by side lie in the palm of the rider's lead hand upon mounting (the one extended forward). This gives side by side a more lively feeling, whereas an over under in Canada would require some grip and cupping. They appear more "stiff" as a result.

4 – Actions of side by side are not too deep- They feel more lively for this reason. Additionally, side-by-side shotgun barrels don't need to swing open as much to reveal the chambers as over-under shotguns do. They are simpler to reload as a result.
