The committee will review every regulation under the new curriculum and schooling to deter commercialization of education of any kind.

7th April, 2017 (https://rainbowinternationalschool.in/): Affiliated schools of CBSE will soon have to provide students with secure lockers to keep their books. As the Central Board of Secondary Education is making important changes to school curriculum, plans are extending to even equip pupils with additional facilities to safeguard educational supplies, which also includes books and study materials. Some of the best CBSE schools in India already follow this pattern as an additional benefit, but now the same will become mandatory.

Benefits:
• The step will also assist students to submit projects, essential study materials at school itself kept safe, so there is no risk of forgetting these back at home.

• Also if pupils are provided with additional books for reference, they have the choice to retain it in the school itself.

• Students will be able to do away with chances of getting robbed of books or homework by other classmates, though such instances are taken care of school management itself, yet the initiative will further undo these instances.

This move is for betterment students’ health as lighter backpacks mean less physical strain on respective children. As per news report, there are about 18,000 schools associated with CBSE already in India not counting the international schools connected, and these have to lay down lockers in the next new affiliation bylaws.

Why Locker-system is needed in CBSE Schools?

One of the senior officials said that a number of parents and students had raised the issue to directors and advisories. This is why stringent measures are now being taken more seriously. Such an investment by the CBSE schools in long-term will help students immensely, as a locker inside premises will allow them to keep books that are not needed to be taken back home for the moment. The government may also bring out NCERT books in greater volumes to lessen the burden.

The previous year in September, CBSE had asked schools not to provide homework to students of Class I and II as they had to ensure that schoolbags are not carried by such young children. At a tender age, children’s spine is at a stage of growth, which could be susceptible to pain in back, shoulder, and muscle along with fatigue (in extreme cases can cause distortion of shoulders and spinal cord due to heavy weight of school bags), thus the effort to install lockets in school premises.

Features of Lockers for Keeping Books

Students will receive locks and their keys from the school, which they have to maintain with themselves safely or entrust it with school management. This clause has not been looked into greatly yet, but is on the subject of discussion. A standard lock will be maintained for uniformity, which can be easily handled by students are not complicated to be dealt with.

Some officials are discussing about the prospects of installing digital lockers which would be protected with passwords, so no stress of losing out the keys. Digital lockers could come into the rule once the standard lockers as system is fully implemented and followed by the CBSE schools after which if needed for higher classes, digital lockers could certainly act as higher security.

The size of lockers and its details has not been disclosed by the committee yet, but it was hinted to be sufficient for the purpose.
