Steve Smith, one of the best players of recent time has said that his unorthodox batting stance has left many bowlers in trouble, it depends on various numbers of factors as he generally positions himself outside the off-stump so that he can’t be dismissed easily.

Smith, the world number 1 Test batsman, has smashed 7227 runs in 73 Tests and 4162 runs in ODIs so far with great technique, which most have failed to understand till date. During a podcast organised by inaugural Indian Premier League champions Rajasthan Royals, Smith spoke about his unusual technique to New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi. Smith was about to play for Royals if the league started in its time.

Talking about his open batting stance, Steve Smith, the Rajasthan Royals captain, shared: "It depends on who's bowling, how is the wicket playing, how I gonna score and stuff like that or how people are trying to get me out, probably that determines how open I am or otherwise how closed I am.”

He further added, "But my general stance where my back foot is going to almost off stump, or may be even outside at stages, I know that anything outside my eyeline isn't hitting the stumps. For me, you shouldn't get out if the ball is not hitting the stumps, so that is just a trick from me when I first started doing it, just limiting the ways I get out."

Smith also said that his off-stump stance helps him to leave those balls which are outside his line of sight and he simply leaves those deliveries. However, he had to leave his national team captaincy after being banned for a year by Cricket Australia for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in a Cape Town Test against South Africa two years ago.

But he returned with a bang and became the highest run-scorer in the Ashes in 2019. He scored plenty of runs in the Ashes last year which came at a stunning average of 147.25. It also included two centuries and a double century, finishing as the second-highest run-getter for Australia, behind Marnus Labuschagne.
