Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is ready to host the 2020 IPL but many within the BCCI feel that there is no point in discussing this as of now amid the global pandemic coronavirus outbreak which has brought the world into a standstill. The IPL which was about to begin from March 29, has been postponed indefinitely by the BCCI amid this crisis situation and the Board will only conduct the league when the situation gets better.

However, SLC president Shammi Silva has recently said that Sri Lanka is keen to host the cash-rich event in the country as they have fewer positive cases compared to India.

"The BCCI will not be in a position to say anything when the world is closed," a senior Board official told PTI.

Sri Lanka has reported just over 200 positive cases so far as against India's more than 13,000. The death toll in India has crossed the 500-mark as well. The official also confirmed that there is no proposal from the SLC as of now and there is no guarantee when a meaningful discussion can take place on this matter even if it comes to BCCI now.

The SLC can host the matches on three grounds -- Galle, Kandy and Premadasa Stadium -- with logistics reduced to less than half as there are no inland flights as well. Having an IPL could help Sri Lanka gain significant financial stability as well. However, as of now, the BCCI are keener on hosting it in India in either of the two slots between September-October and October-November.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that IPL could take place outside India. Earlier on two occasions, the IPL has been played outside as well. The 2009 edition had played in South Africa due to Lok Sabha elections and in 2014, the first two weeks of IPL had taken place in UAE because of the general assembly polls in India.

"Sri Lanka has been BCCI's ally at the ICC and their proposal is understandable. But what about once he (Manohar) steps down next month. You could see new equations forming and there could be multiple options on table, not just Sri Lanka," he concluded.
