Former India player Gautam Gambhir has recently shared that the credit for India’s swashbuckling opener Rohit Sharma's stunning rise in white-ball cricket must be given to former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Since making his debut way back in 2007, Rohit Sharma used to bat in the middle-order where his consistency was his main issue at that time. However, Dhoni had the eye to see someone’s talent and in this case, too, he took note of Rohit's hidden talent and helped him in the team. Dhoni had promoted Rohit Sharma as an opener in 2013 and that move certainly worked as the blessing in disguise for him as the right-handed batsman has become one of the most prolific top-order batsmen in white-ball cricket not only for India but also for the world cricket.
"Where Rohit Sharma is today, it is because of M.S. Dhoni," Gautam Gambhir shared his views to the Sports Tak as per India Today.
"You can talk about the selection committee and team management, but if you do not have the backing from your captain then it is all useless. Everything is in the hands of the captain. How Dhoni backed Rohit Sharma over a period of time, I don't think any other player has been given such support," he further added.
Earlier, Gautam Gambhir had described Rohit Sharma as the best white-ball cricketer in the world now. Recently, Rohit Sharma celebrated his birthday at home with his wife and daughter where everyone poured their wishes from across the globe. In his birthday wish for Rohit Sharma, Gambhir wrote: "Happy Birthday to the best white-ball cricketer in the world Rohit Sharma! Have a great year ahead!!"
However, Rohit also responded with, "Don't know about that Gauti bhai. But loving your work," praising his former teammate for his work.
