Irving, TX – The White House’s decision to organize what is being called a moonshot for cancer is good news to researchers, doctor and patients alike, officials at the Las Colinas Cancer Center say. By putting a laser focus on this pressing national health issue, the government initiative may very well help inspire the next great breakthroughs on the cancer-fighting front.

“By providing a better way to coordinate stakeholders, the White House is helping ensure a concerted effort,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Las Colinas Cancer Center. “The moonshot has the potential to open the door on greater collaboration and information sharing while also clearing the way for accelerated research that could very well advance treatment of the disease greatly in the coming months and years.”

Announced earlier this year, the cancer moonshot was created on the heels of Vice President Joe Biden’s son Beau’s death. Both Biden and President Barack Obama believe that focusing the country’s investments while stating a singular mission will aid in eradicating this disease. To that end, a Cancer Moonshot Task Force has been established to oversee an estimated $1 billion investment in research. In addition, the task force will promote private-sector efforts, information sharing and expand clinical trials. An educational and awareness component is also a part of the push.

“The full benefits of the moonshot may not be known for some time, but by focusing attention on this important endeavor the government has provided hope that better treatments, better preventative methods and a cure may be on the horizon,” says Dr. Echt.

It is estimated that 1.7 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer each year. About 600,000 die from the disease. The moonshot is hoped to greatly reduce, or eliminate these numbers, in the foreseeable future.
