Obesity May Increase 2nd Cancer Risk in Men

Irving, TX, – Men who are diagnosed with one form of cancer may find themselves at higher risk than others for developing a second type of the disease if obesity is also a concern in their lives. That’s the finding of a recent study that cast more light on the potential dangers of carrying around excess weight.

The study in question tracked data related to more than 230,000 male cancer survivors. Over the course of the study period, nearly 5,000 of those men developed secondary cancers. The overall calculated increase of risk was 1.1 times higher in men who were obese than in male cancer survivors who weighed in at recommended ranges.

“The findings add to the increasing body of evidence that shows just how dangerous unchecked obesity can be over the long run,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Las Colinas Cancer Center. “Obesity-related cancers aside, morbidly excessive weights are linked to increased risks for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and a host of other conditions. The new study enhances the many reasons why addressing obesity can be a critical step in safeguarding long-term health.”

Obesity is estimated to affect about a third of the American population. Takings steps to address weight can greatly improve health while also lowering the risk of developing a number of potentially fatal and/or life-limiting health conditions.

“People who are overweight are strongly urged to talk to their healthcare providers about all options to help them lose weight and maintain healthy levels,” says Dr. Echt. “In men and women alike, maintaining a healthy weight can lower primary cancer risks. For men, as the study shows, it may also help lower the risks associated with secondary cancers.”
