Raagreet Charitable Trust organized its first live public event on 17th Jan, 2016 at The Hall of Quest (Nehru Planetarium) in Worli, Mumbai. The event was an interactive session on ‘Intellectual Property Rights’ in Classical Music. It was conducted by Mr. Nitin Potdar, a lawyer & an IPR consultant who heads Symbol- a Law Firm based in Mumbai.

Pandit Brij Narayan, India’s finest Sarod Player & world-renowned Indian Classical Musician was the guest of honor at the event. Amongst the other dignitaries present were Sanchaita Ghoshal, the founder & trustee of Raagreet Charitable Trust.

The event witnessed huge fraternity of musicians, arts, maestros & followers of Indian classical music.

The prime discussion in the 1 hour session comprised of how the intellectual property of artists fail to generate revenue & retain its copyrights owing to lack of legal knowledge. Mr Nitin Potdar, in his interactive talk, said “In the music industry, playback singers receive learning & timely help on protection of their Intellectual rights through many associations while classical musicians have no such platform where they can approach for support. Further, classical musicians fear any kind of controversies and thus do not revolt when they observe breach of their copyright.”

Speaking on the category of people falling under IPR, he said, “Strict action on Intellectual Copyright Infringement can be taken by: Lyricists, Composers and Performers. They are the co-owners of the musical creation & can take legal action against any individual or organization who infringes their rights. The directive sets the duration of copyright to 60 years following the death of the musician or artist. It further termed IPR as “Boudhik Sampada Adhikar” and is protected by the Amendment Act, 2001

For educational use, only 30% or 10 min of total length of music can be utilized while for commercial use: either prior permission needs to be taken from the owner or royalty needs to be paid time-to-time (not the whole amount at once)”

In his final discussion, Mr. Nitin Potdar said, “Since I am a huge patron of Indian Classical Music, I would willingly offer free of cost legal help to anyone who approaches me through Raagreet Charitable Trust and thereby assure to help him/her within 24 hours.

The event concluded with remedial measures for Intellectual Property Rights and Raagreet Charitable Trust’s initiative to be a strong backbone to all Hindustani Classical Musicians, Artists & Maestros.
