Ramdai Bachoo is currently announcing her nomination for an Animal Welfare Award, with winners to be decided in six months’ time.

Ramdai Bachoo is pleased to announce that she has been nominated to receive an award for her work in animal welfare. The Animal Welfare Award for which Ramdai Bachoo was nominated recognizes outstanding work done by veterinarians in the field of leadership, public service, education, and advocacy of animal wellness. This nomination in particular recognizes the sustained work on behalf of Ramdai Bachoo for improving regulations around animals in research and laboratory positions.

According to Ramdai Bachoo, animals used for research are not always necessarily mistreated, but they do not have access to some of the comforts that they might have in the wild or even in other domesticated situations. Ramdai Bachoo is working to change this situation. An exotic animal veterinarian, Ramdai Bachoo knows the ins and outs of working with animals that are typically used for research, especially mice and rats.
“I am very invested in continuing to discover and work with alternatives to the standard laboratory animal procedures,” says Ramdai Bachoo. “For example, animals used for education in our own veterinary school system can be replaced with models, eliminating the need for unnecessary surgery on animals such as dogs.”

Ramdai Bachoo is hard at work to continue to educate the public on both the importance of the research that is being done in laboratories as well as on what can be done to protect the welfare of the animals being used. For Ramdai Bachoo, doing this work means helping to develop and raise awareness about replacing animals in laboratories, as well as refining the exams done on these animals to make them more and more humane. For animals that are still tested on, Ramdai Bachoo is helping to make sure that animals are receiving the proper care and treatment, providing them with adequate pain medicine.

According to Ramdai Bachoo, one of the biggest issues that animals in labs face is the problem of isolation, which leads to stress and boredom and even self destructive behavior. Ramdai Bachoo is helping to develop new systems for cages to allow social animals to reside together in groups.

The results of the Animal Welfare Award will be decided in six months.
