Michael Biering was honored when the pastor of his church asked him if he could recommend his musical services to some of his fellow pastors. Apparently, there were many local churches lacking in live music. Many still have choirs and possibly an organ player, but not much else. When Michael Biering’s pastor shared that he recruited his own musical parishioners to perform each week, his colleagues were intrigued. Many of them planned to do the same kind of recruitment, but asked if they could “borrow” Michael Biering to be the drummer until they found someone suitable.

“I did not know there was such a market for a church band drummer! How could I say no when I love playing the music and seeing the joy it brings the listeners? I jumped at the opportunity and now my weekends are pretty booked with my church gigs!” laughs Michael Biering.

Michael Biering is not playing traditional church music when he performs. The music has rock, country, and folk influences. Many of the songs are written by the pastor and the music is arranged by the singer. Michael Biering knows that the music is particularly appealing to the younger parishioners. He also knows that this is one of the reasons the pastor is so keen to feature it every chance he gets. The challenge of appealing to the youth grows in complexity each year. The music keeps the service light and fun for all participants.

The pastor has also asked Michael Biering to start performing at some of the church’s functions such as holidays or charity events. Again, Michael Biering is so honored that his music is being enjoyed by so many that he would never turn down these opportunities. He also feels that his skills have gotten better since he has been playing so often.

“I remember when the church did not really have much in the way of music. It was pretty bland. I am so pleased to have helped bring the music back into my church as well as other churches. Playing music is therapeutic for me especially when I see the happiness it is bringing to my friends and acquaintances” says Michael Biering.
