Versatility and adaptation are the name of the game for any sport. Remind your players that every great leader had to be a great follower first. A good coach needs to accept the idea that his or her team will not always be at 100%. In fact, it is likely that most of the time your team will be operating under less than ideal situations. One good player may have an injury, or perhaps could not make the game for one reason or another.

That is why the coach needs to develop a system and forge a leader for the team, one among them that everyone respects and who will not abuse this position. Having a team leader or captain is important because they establish the standard of excellence you want the team to have. Though it is the primary job of a coach to lead a team to victory, the best ones know that they need a kind of hierarchy in order to get things done on the field. This is because the team knows that the player’s advice is more immediate and important, because they are all out there together trying to get a win.
