She started out as a freelance bike courier, finding work where she could and just scraping by at first. Soon though, within the first year, her reputation grew quickly. She became known as one of the best freelance couriers in New York City, all while she was raising two children and practicing amateur photography.

Topete quickly learned that she had to be fast and determined to keep her job at Mercury Rises, meaning her photography had to fall to the back burner.

After four years of putting foot-to-pedal and rubber to pavement, staying above water at Mercury Rises, Topete’s photographs started to gain some notoriety back home, thanks in part to her husband and two children.
