Valerie Topete started her career in New York City as a freelance bicycle courier with little knowledge of the city. She moved to New York in 2008 and started looking for a job. She found a few courier jobs on Craigslist and started delivering materials for people across the city. Her first few trips over the bridges and through the streets of New York were adventures, but eventually she became efficient enough to pay her rent with courier jobs. She recently became the Top Rider for Mercury Rises, widely regarded as the best courier service in New York by those in the industry.
For three years, Valerie Topete worked solely as a freelance courier, shuttling sensitive documents and gifts across town for various clients. She made a point to charge less than the regular courier companies so she could find the most clients. This meant that she had to work more hours and take more jobs to make a living. She loved riding through the streets of New York, so she didn’t mind. She even started taking her camera with her to capture all the hidden places, people, and moments she witnessed during her journeys.
Finally, Valerie Topete was contacted by John Tudebaker, the owner of Mercury Rises. Tudebaker had been in business for over 20 years because his was one of the best courier services in town. He prided himself on hiring the best couriers and making them compete for the best routes and the most clients. He awarded one “Top Rider” title to the courier who had shown that he or she was the most effective at getting deliveries to their destinations on time.
Valerie Topete started working for Mercury Rises soon after she was interviewed for the position and quickly started challenging other, more experienced riders. Before long, she was taking some of the best routes available and impressing Tudebaker and her other supervisors. After four years now on the job, Tudebaker made her the Top Rider for the company, meaning she has first pick of routes and clients and she cannot be challenged for her routes by most of the other couriers at the company.
