Tom Brough of Chicago explains what it takes to successfully run a Chicago Marathon and succeed in life and business.

Three-time Chicago marathon runner, Tom Brough of Chicago, leads the race as a financial investment advisor. He has proved to be a strong finisher with over 20 years of experience as a financial advisor at Brough investment Advisors and several years managing the hedge access group’s portfolio funds.

Tom Brough of Chicago credits his success and refined determination to the devotion of his family, literature, and his passion for running marathons. His passion for running started at a very young age but became more prominent shortly after graduating from DePaul University, where he earned a degree in finance in 1993. In fact it was right around the same time he was starting Brough Investment Advisors. One year he decided he would participate in one of the regions more popular running events, the Chicago Marathon. At first the idea of a marathon was intimidating because he wasn’t quite sure what he was getting himself into.

To participate in the Chicago marathon, you must finish within six hours and 30 minutes and abide by all event rules. The Chicago Marathon is the pinnacle of achievement for elite athletes in everyday runners alike. On a typical race day, you will see runners from all 50 states represented, and more than 100 countries are also competing. Each of them set out to accomplish personal dream by crossing the finish line in Grant Park. Grant Park is an urban landscape in the loop community area of Chicago located in Chicago’s central business district. Parks most notable features are Millennium Park, Buckingham fountain, and the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum campus boasting one of the most beautiful scenic views in the Midwest.

A marathon, as he knows, is a 26.2-mile. With proper training anyone in good physical condition can run a marathon if they are willing to prepare and commit. It takes roughly 12 weeks to get your body in shape to run a marathon but even as physically demanding as a marathon can be it can challenging mentally. In order to be successful and overcome the hurdles, you must have a positive mindset and find your rhythm. For best practices, Tom Brough Chicago suggests that you start out with runs of about 5 to 7 miles and gradually increase that distance each week. The key is to pace yourself as your body adjusts to the exhausting long-distance runner is ahead.

In addition to increasing your input to output, you should also have a very strict diet that is rich in protein for recovery and balanced with carbohydrates for energy to burning. Although many people will recommend an electrolyte based sports drink, it is more feasible to drink and all natural alternatives such as coconut water with a small amount of nectar flavoring for preference. Sports drinks can help with the most intense dehydration, but the electrolytes and natural potassium levels in coconut water are the best for replenishing your body naturally. During a marathon, there are eight stations that provide runners with drinks to replenish themselves but you won’t have those available during training so be mindful of your hydration. You also can’t burn yourself out with overexertion, is just as important to rest your body as it is to train.

Tom Brough Chicago believes that a healthy body coincide with a healthy mind. Overcoming challenges you never believed were possible can do wonders for your personal life and the longevity of your career.
