Thea Jandzio is a Licensed Master Social Worker in New York, and an executive who is committed to improving service quality and agency performance. She is also a member of the Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT.

CERT is a volunteer program that educates people about disaster preparedness, and trains them in basic disaster response skills. In the event of an emergency, professional responders may be overwhelmed and not able to immediately help everyone who is in need of help. And that is where CERT team members come in.

The skills that CERT members are trained in include fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.Thea Jandzio is an experienced professional in the health and human services industry. With the training they have received they are able to help people in their neighborhoods or in the workplace. CERT team members are also able to help emergency first responders by taking an active role in emergency preparedness programs in their communities.

CERT is part of a nationwide grassroots movement that encourages everyone to help make their neighborhoods safer. Every town, of course, already has its own highly skilled professional responders who can and do handle emergencies on a daily basis. But large-scale disasters can overwhelm them, and that is where CERT figures into the picture. The CERT program gives people the practical training they need to give immediate help to family members and neighbors. Many people, of course, will respond positively in an emergency situation, but with the training that CERT provides, they will be better equipped to help effectively and efficiently.

People who are interested in volunteering to become CERT team members must complete core CERT training. The initial training consists of one day of training a week for seven weeks, followed by day-long refresher drills two times a year. The training is open to people who are eighteen or older.

In addition to her involvement with CERT, Thea Jandzio is the Executive Program Director of Adult and Family Residential Services at the Jewish Board of Family and Children Services, the largest non-profit in New York City. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Oneonta State University, and a Masters in Social Work from Fordham University.
