Teresa Susmaras: Helping Patients Through The Practice of Neuropsychology

Teresa Susmaras grew up in Brookfield, IL and has fond memories of her childhood and deep bonds with her family. She chose to study for her bachelors at the University of Chicago, close to her hometown.

 
Teresa Susmaras has helped patients through the practice of psychology and neuropsychology for over a decade.Through the years she has gained experience working in neuropsychology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Rush University Medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She also furthered her knowledge in the field as both a teaching and research assistant at Suffolk University.

When Susmaras embarked on her first research position in neuropsychology at Suffolk University and began truly delving into the field, she found her true passion. While analyzing structural and anatomical neuroimaging data, then correlating resulting behaviors, Susmaras found her forte. Soon after, she began working with a neuropsychologist and neuroscientist at Suffolk University and began working to earn her Ph.D. in the field. Susmaras began working in the Brain Imaging Analysis Laboratory, and eventually conducted both her Masters and dissertation theses on her findings in corpus callosum and creativity and antisocial personality disorders.

After receiving her Masters in Clinical Psychology, Susmaras began working as a Neuropsychology trainee at Beth Isreal Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Here she performed a variety of neuropsychological evaluations involving problems stemming from learning and attention disorders, head injury, stroke, epilepsy, neurodegenerative disorders and multiple sclerosis. Teresa Susmaras also treated patients with remediation therapy and provided evaluation feedback and interpretation.

Susmaras then moved onto Rush University Medical Center, working as a neuropsychology resident in the Behavioral Sciences Department. During the residency, Teresa Susmaras conducted Wada testing, provided outpatient psychotherapy services and conducted neuropsychological evaluations focusing on patients in a wide array of age categories.

Susmaras continued gaining experience in the field of neuropsychology as a fellow in the Psychiatry Department at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. While at the hospital, Susmaras provided neuropsychological evaluations for a wide array of patients including those with traumatic brain injury, intellectual disabilities, and genetic disorders.

Since embarking on her career in neuropsychology, Susmaras has treated patients with a wide array of neurological and psychiatric conditions including epilepsy, neurocognitive disorders, bipolar disorder, stroke, intellectual disabilities and schizophrenia. Other areas of interest include Neuropsychological assessment in a forensic population, evaluation of cognitive impairments, risk factors for violence, criminology and victimology.
