At the center of many success stories in business are confident leaders who are not afraid to face challenges and take their organizations to greater heights.

At some point in their career, every successful business leader has been put to the test. How they handle the obstacles, excitement and change proves whether they truly are meant to lead. Verizon’s Director of Network Infrastructure Planning at Verizon, Steve Misencik, knows all about challenges. For 25 years, he’s forged a successful career in the telecommunications industry, earning the respect of peers and superiors for his considerate, decisive and goal-oriented nature.

Steve Misencik’s path to executive leadership hasn’t been without its fair share of obstacles. Growing from an assistant traffic engineer at MCI to executive leadership at Verizon hasn’t been easy. However, Misencik has kept a few nuggets of wisdom at heart during his 25-year career. He shares a few tips on leadership that have helped him excel.

Good communicator

The visual of highly successful leaders is that of a “bulldozer,” someone who’s not afraid to flatten every obstacle in their path. Successful leaders, however, are careful to cultivate good relations with the people around them. They make sure they are approachable by people at all levels of the organization, and take the time to communicate the vision.

Make good decisions

Confident leaders perceived as good decision makers have a high probability of succeeding, but there’s more every leader can do to improve their decision making. It starts by gathering all information, analyzing it carefully, and examining any trends to ensure any decisions made are well thought out. Also, leaders who seek people that comment, challenge and/or disagree with them, they are likely to make better decisions. https://stevemisencik.edublogs.org/

Willing to learn

It is very important for leaders to gain knowledge continuously. The willingness to learn more helps leaders improve their skills and abilities. Successful leaders develop their skills by becoming good at what they do, which comes from gaining more knowledge.

Decisiveness

One of the crucial skills a leader has to hone is being decisive and when to reflect on the big picture before making a decision. In times of crisis or growth, a number of decisions have to be made, with less time to ponder. There is always a temptation to make these decisions quickly, but confident leaders remain calm and never rushes to conclusions before gathering all facts.
