As a green energy consultant with an interest in waste to energy technology, he knows that there is an estimated 230 million tons of garbage generated in the United States every year, and a lot of it ends up along the roadside.

Another great way to give back to the community, says Stephen Crivillaro, is to volunteer to tutor a child in a subject you are good in, like English or math. He also advocates getting involved with literacy programs, and teaching people who never learned how to read. This, he says, might be one of the best ways to give back to the community, because adult illiteracy is such a serious problem and teaching others to read can have a ripple effect, easing other problems in the process.

Stephen Crivillaro says that it is important for all Americans to participate in the democratic process, and he urges everyone to get out and vote on Election Day. That in itself is a great way to give back to the community, but he says you can go a step further by taking a friend or a senior citizen to the polling booth, or volunteer at a polling place on the day of an election.

If all else fails, Stephen Crivillaro says that you can contact your local volunteer center for ways to serve. There is one in every community and they have no shortage of ideas and opportunities.
