Sherilyn Kaye Edwards has always known that helping people in times of trouble would be a major part of her life. Sherilyn Kaye Edwards’s desire to help people inspired her to begin to pursue other opportunities, in addition to her degree, so she became certified as and EMT-I. Once she had successfully became an EMT-I, Sherilyn Kaye Edwards’s next stop in her career was to work as a patient care technician. As a patient care technician, she specialized in burn recovery during her early years as an RN student at UTMB. Again, Sherilyn Kaye Edwards relished the opportunity to help people regain their normal lives, but wanted to be in a position to help the injured parties sooner.

As an EMT, Sherilyn Kaye Edwards would be able to respond to injured people on the scene of the injury, reaching them as soon as possible and beginning treatment to minimize the damage done to them as a result of their predicament. Unlike many people Sherilyn Kaye Edwards found that the high pressure situation of the EMT profession was appealing, and the opportunity to help people immediately after they were injured was too good to pass up. As a certified EMT-I, Sherilyn Kaye Edwards felt that she could truly make the maximum amount of difference in patients' lives. “I want to have a direct impact,” said Sherilyn Kaye Edwards, “and know that my work is truly making a difference to the people we are able to reach. The work is hard, but it is very rewarding.”

As a certified EMT-I, Sherilyn Kaye Edwards works with both ground and air-based teams to bring injured parties directly to the hospital. Sherilyn Kaye Edwards specializes in high volume, critical and emergent prehospital care. In order to do the job well, Sherilyn Kaye Edwards must have a deep understanding of various physical injuries and the most efficient ways to treat a variety of conditions. Sherilyn Kaye Edwards’s knowledge and experience, gained during her time in various ICU units, serving as a Patient Care Technician, will serve her well as an EMT-I.
