Scott Krautman looks forward to each spring, and the start of a new baseball season. He likes it when the regular season gets underway, and as a fan of the Miami Marlins he takes in as many games as he can during the course of the season. But he likes spring training even better.

For the last couple of years, Scott Krautman has made a circuit around Florida each spring, checking in on the Grapefruit League teams that do their spring training in the Sunshine State. Fourteen major league teams make up the Grapefruit League, he says. "Teams have been coming to Florida for Spring Training since 1888m," he says. "That's more than 125 years. Needless to say, it has become a big part of the Florida economy, something that we really depend on."

Municipal and county governments in Florida spend millions of dollars to attract and keep Major League teams coming back each spring. The Lee County government sold up to eighty one million dollars in bonds, Scott Krautman says, to fund the new spring baseball stadium for the Boston Red Sox, a scaled down version of Fenway Park where the team plays eighteen exhibition games each spring.

"And it's worth every penny," Scott Krautman says. The Governor of Florida leads the charge in welcoming Major League teams to the state, touting its climate and natural surroundings. The payoff in tourism is considerable.

Scott Krautman says that when he was a child growing up in Ocala, his father took him to a Detroit Tigers exhibition game. The team's spring training center in Lakeland was one of the closest to his home, and they spent three days there watching team workouts and games. "It's one of my happiest childhood memories," he says. Today he still visits the Tigers in Lakeland, one stop on a circuit around Florida that begins in Jupiter near his home, where the St Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins train. From there he heads north, making stops in Port St. Lucie, Viera, Kissimmee and Lake Buena Vista, before heading west to Lakeland and the Tigers.

From Lakeland, Scott Krautman's junket goes on to the Blue Jays' Spring Training in Dunedin, the Phillies in Clearwater, the Yankees in Tampa, ending finally all the way down in Fort Myers on the Gulf coast, where the Red Sox and Twins play make their spring training camps. From there he drives back across the state to home, just in time for Opening Day.
