Salvatore Taddeo Jr. and a Fire Safety Director’s License

Posted November 18, 2015 by pzmediainc1

The Fire Safety Director’s License was introduced into law in the early 70’s. New York City mandated that all buildings of a specific type needed to have a Fire Safety Director on duty to reduce the fire emergencies in these buildings.

It was in 1973 that the City of New York introduced a new local law that would aim to make buildings a safer place and hopefully reduce fires in occupied buildings. All Group B Occupancy Buildings, which are business buildings that are high rises, were to have a certified Fire Safety Director on duty. The city government wants to help reduce fire emergencies in these business buildings.

A few years later, the law was reintroduced in the 1980’s. This new law essentially expanded on the previously written law. Now, not only did all Group B Occupancy Buildings needs a Fire Safety Director on duty, but Group R1 Occupancy buildings, which includes hotel and motel high rises, were included as well.

With a new position necessary for a large amount of buildings in the New York City area, people were eager to learn about how to become a Fire Safety Director in order to meet the protocols of the city and make their building less susceptible to fires.

The process of becoming a Fire Safety Director involves three separate processes. The first part begins with prospective FSDs completing a 20 hour training course. At the end of the course, an exam is held at a school approved by the local fire department. The second part requires these potential FSDs to take a 100 question test that is administered at the Fire Headquarters. The third and final part is an onsite exam that is conducted by the fire department. Only at the completion of all of the processes is a person issued their Fire Safety License.

It is the duty of the building owner to ensure the safe implementation of all of the fire safety regulations. This includes the hiring of a Fire Safety Director. The FSD’s position works as a liaison to the fire department in the event of an emergency. The FSD will operate the fire alarm panel, as they are directly responsible for making building wide announcements during the case of a fire emergency.

Included in the list of the FSD’s duties is managing the floor evacuations under the direction of buildings fire safety plan, which is previously established. The FSD is also responsible for documenting the fire protection protocols within the building, conducting fire inspections and is the leader in conducting and supervising building fire drills on occasion.

Salvatore Taddeo Jr. went through the entire three part process to become a Fire Safety Director. Proud to be able to make his home a safer place, owning a Fire Safety Director’s License allows Salvatore Taddeo Jr. to be eligible to oversee the implementation of fire safety regulations in New York City buildings that require an FSD.
