An experienced and passionate Lake Michigan sailor, David Albon seeks to share basic sailing tips, and his love of the activity, with those seeking to pursue the activity.

David Albon is someone who rarely turns down the opportunity to sail, having spent much of childhood, and his free time, aboard a sporting craft atop the challenging waters of chilly Lake Michigan. A passionate sailor with an unquenchable thirst for the sport, Albon never misses the chance to share his love of sailing with family and friends, or to help those interested in pursuing the activity to better know and understand how to make their next sailing adventure as thrilling and memorable as possible.

Below, Albon shares basic sailing tips with those new to the sport; an effort to not only build a solid sailing foundation for the beginner, but to also lay the groundwork for many sailing adventures to come.

Pick the Right Time and Place
If you’re looking to master the sport of sailing, says David Albon, it’s important to pick the right place and time to learn. Be sure to pick a time when winds are relatively calm, and a place that is generally uncrowded, at least at a certain time of day. A low volume of traffic and light, manageable winds can help you begin to develop your skills in a relatively safe, stress-free environment.

Begin with a Smaller Boat
Before setting sail, be sure to select a smaller, more manageable boat to practice with/on, one that is easier to maneuver and learn on. A smaller boat may also help when it comes to practice what to do in case of capsizing.

Choose a One-Sail Vessel
Make the learning process as simple and uncomplicated as possible. Choose a one-sailed vessel when learning how to sail. Once you’ve mastered control over one sail, it becomes easier to learn control over multiple lines and sails later on.

Practice as Much as You Need
If you aren’t confident in your ability to move to or attempt control of a bigger boat, then continue to practice on a smaller, more manageable vessel. Though a cliché, the “practice makes perfect” mantra accurately applies in the field of sailing, as one can never be too good or advanced when it comes to control of a sea bound craft.David Albon enjoys sailing across the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan.
