Richard Barry Nel travels on his motorcycle from Canada to South America along the western slope of the Rocky Mountains

Professional world traveler and journalist Richard Barry Nel embarks on a cross-continent trip to South America from Canada.

Beginning in the summer of 2007, Richard Barry Nel set out on the trip of a lifetime and what he would call soon after, the most exciting trip he has ever taken. For a writer who makes his living traveling the world, the label of "most exciting trip ever taken," should not be taken lightly. The trip itself took around three to four months as Richard Barry Nel stopped to experience every new territory he encountered. He explained that though he didn't cover that much ground physically, the number of environmental changes he encountered was astounding.

Though the trip began in 2007, Richard Barry Nel was planning it for years. The amount of planning and time it took to research the areas he would be in, especially the most dangerous sections of Mexico and South America, took a significant amount of time. Packing was a puzzle considering you can only take so much on a motorcycle, and some things were more essential than others. Clothing was not a top priority for Richard Barry Nel on this lengthy road trip.

During the trip, Richard Barry Nel documented every notable experience worthy of being described. Whether it was crossing the border into Mexico or describing a sunrise at 11,000 feet in the high Rocky Mountains, it was recorded for readers to enjoy. The collection of encounters read more like a personal travel journal rather than a book, making it a nice change of pace to typical travel recordings.

The book was easy to read and full of exciting encounters, especially near the boarder between the United States and Mexico. Richard Barry Nel found himself in a number of substantially questionable situations as he rode through drug territories and violent areas south of the border.

"It was definitely one of my favorite trips to date, if not the favorite," Richard Barry Nel explains, "There was never a boring moment. Sometimes I wish there had been, honestly."
