Randy Haveson developed a non-threatening approach to focus on college-age drinking

Randy Haveson is committed to working with college students and other young adults who are in early sobriety. He is a counselor and addiction specialist who has been working in the field since 1986. His own recovery from drug addiction began in 1984.

"I am an addict in long term recovery," he says, "and I want to help others who are suffering form the disease of addiction."

Randy Haveson began working in higher education in 1990. Over a nine year period he worked on three different college campuses, all in the same position but with expanded focus. He also began speaking more and more on other campuses around the United States, and as he did so developed a national reputation as an effective speaker on the issues of drug addiction and alcoholism.

It was a field that was ready for serious attention. Then as now, virtually all college students are affected by alcohol and drinking, even those who do not drink. But most do: according to surveys, about four of every five college students consume alcohol, and of those who do, about half of them also consume through binge drinking. And there are serious negative consequences from all of that consumption. "Over 1,800 college students die each year because of alcohol and other drugs," Randy Haveson says, "and thousands more are injured or affected by the harmful use of alcohol or other drugs." That includes more than 690,000 students who are assaulted by another student who is under the influence of alcohol, and 97,000 who become victims of an alcohol-related sexual assault.

As Randy Haveson knows, most college students have already used alcohol before their college careers begin. But the consumption levels often increase, and the pressure to drink is often intensified. This is aided and abetted by the fact that many of these students are on their own for the first time. It led him to develop his "Party With a Plan" risk reduction program that changes the way that college students look at drinking, by showing them how to make good decisions about alcohol.

In 1999 Randy Haveson took his Party with a Plan program on the road, and decided to become a full-time professional speaker. His presentations and self-esteem workshops became widely recognized and appreciated.
