A compilation of photography tips to help beginning photographers get started.

Photography has become more popular than ever in the digital age. The ease of storing and capturing great photos with a good digital camera appeals to many, as does the ability to edit photos on a computer after they are taken. This is something unheard of not so long ago, when film cameras were the only option. If you’ve decided that photography may be an art form that you are interested in pursuing, there are a few things you should know, starting out.

First, you need to purchase a digital camera, if you haven’t already. Of course, every cell phone has a camera these days, but a DSLR (digital single-lens reflex camera) is very popular with photographers, both amateurs and professionals alike and should give better results. David Berkowitz of Chicago, a respected nature and urban photographer prefers the Canon Rebel, and has a few different lenses for different subjects.

Next, you need to familiarize yourself with the different settings on your camera. Certain camera settings work better in particular circumstances than others. That being said, don’t feel like to have to learn everything all at once. Berkowitz recommends getting started on “auto” mode, familiarizing yourself with the feel of the camera before you get into anything more advanced.

Another tip for beginners is one that is often overlooked – background. No matter how beautiful or interesting the subject is, if the background is cluttered, busy, or has something unsightly in it, your photo will not shine. Make sure the background is, at the least, unremarkable and at the best, a nice compliment to your subject.

David Berkowitz Chicago most important piece of advice for newbie photographers is this: find a mentor. Find a photographer whose work you want emulate (not imitate) and ask for some tips and pointers to help you get started. Berkowitz frequently mentors up and coming photographers in the Chicago area.

Last, but not least, don’t be afraid to make mistakes! If you want to grow as an artist and a photographer, you need to be willing to take risks. Get out there and start clicking. You’ll figure out what you need to know if you keep persevering, get a mentor and get familiar with your camera.
