Outi Crannell Turns Tragedy Into Hope for Others

After losing her child to leukemia, Outi Crannell set out to help others struggling with cancer.

After surviving the unimaginable, Outi Crannell had decided that tragedy was not going to get the best of her; and instead, she would turn one of the most devastating losses of her life into a beacon of hope for those facing similar situations. When Crannell’s daughter had first been diagnosed with cancer at a young age, the wife, teacher, artist and mother of two decided to step up her involvement with aid programs such as CCF Children's Cancer Fund and the American Red Cross.

Outi Crannell explains this life-altering time with vivid detail. “I lost my daughter Eeva Crannell to cancer when she was 16 years old. Eeva was diagnosed at the age of 2 with the most common childhood leukemia, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She ended up having two relapses and eventually got a bone marrow transplant at the age of 6. Eeva was fine for 10 years. She developed a secondary cancer, osteosarcoma, because of her harsh treatments with chemotherapy and radiation. Eeva's body could not tolerate the treatment and she died on May 12th 2009. Eeva was treated in the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital in Valhalla, New York,” says Crannell.

Crannell and her family had a chance to meet Eeva's bone marrow donor, Don Brady of Johnson City, Tennessee in April, 2007. They thanked him for his selfless generosity, and to this day still see Brady as a model for those considering becoming donors. “I want to raise awareness of the importance of donating blood and especially platelets. Many cancer patients need constantly blood transfusions and especially platelets, since their life span is shorter than the red blood cells. Even after something like losing a child happened to me, I want to honor my daughter's memory by creating a positive impact,” says Crannell

Outi Crannell and her husband, Rick, have created a Team Eva Fundraising Page on the Active Network that has already surpassed its $1,000 goal by more than three times. You can donate by following the link: http://www.active.com/donate/CCFWalk2011/RCranne1.
