O’Neil Blake is a graduate student at LRU, and Cornerback Coach for its football team

O’Neil Blake is on course to receive his Master of Business Administration degree from Lenoir-Rhyne University in May of 2016, the same school where he starred on the football team for three years, and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

He did not originally intend to come to Lenoir-Rhyne University. A native of Jamaica, he came to the United State at the age of fourteen and settled in Kissimmee, Florida, where he went to Osceola High School and lettered in football, soccer, and track and field. He has always been an excellent student, but it was his ability on the gridiron that caught the attention of college football scouts.

“Following graduating Osceola High School in 2010, I attended Glenville State College on a football scholarship,” he recalls. Glenville State is in West Virginia and he spent two years on the football team there, although he did not play during his first season. “I was red-shirted my first year,” he explains. Even though he didn’t get into any games, his football ability still got some attention. “That same year, I was awarded Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year.” He was also hitting the books: he was named to the school’s Provost List that same year.

During the spring of O'Neil Blake Football second year at Glenville, he made the decision to transfer to a school that better met his needs, both academically and athletically. After researching a number of different schools he finally settled on Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina. “I started attending school at Lenoir-Rhyne University in the summer of 2012.” He began playing on its football team that fall, and continued to excel as its starting cornerback. He finished his playing days with two hundred tackles, five interceptions, thirty break-ups, and thirty-five passes defended. He was also named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

For the 2015 football season, no longer eligible to play because he’d graduated, O’Neil Blake began working as a graduate assistant and cornerbacks coach for the LRU football team. At the same time, he continued working toward his MBA, with a concentration on Health Care Administration.
