Mark Hankins is the new Assistant Athletic Director at the University of Iowa.

Mark Hankins realized one of his career goals in becoming an administrator in a National Collegiate Athletic Association institution. He was named the Assistant Athletic Director at the University of Iowa in the summer of 2014.
"I feel fortunate to have this opportunity come available now in my career," he said when he was named to the post, "at a place and in a conference where I want to be."

At the time he accepted the Assistant AD post he was just wrapping up his seventh year as the head coach of the men's golf team at Iowa. He took over the struggling program in the summer of 2007 and in less than two years took it from a 155 ranking to a consistent conference contender, including a school-record tie for tenth place in the 2011 NCAA championship. The team's rise to national prominence began in 2009, when the Mark Hankins-coached team jumped to 54th in the national rankings and the team got their first tournament title since 2004. The following year he coached them to a fifth place finish in the 2009 Southeast Regionals, and a 17t5h place finish at the NCAA championships in Toledo, Ohio. That was the first time the University of Iowa had qualified for the championships in more than ten years.

Mark Hankins Iowa success with the University of Iowa followed eight successful years with another Big Ten team, the Michigan State University Spartans. Mark Hankins coached MSU to ten tournament titles, including Big Ten Championships in 2005 and 2007. Both of those years he was voted the Big Ten Coach of the Year by his peers. He also took the Spartans to five NCAA appearances in his eight years there, including a 23rd place finish in the 2007 Division I National Championship.

After turning the Iowa golf program around, Mark Hankins said it took a lot of hard work and focus. "You've got to maintain a top-notch schedule, you have to recruit the absolute best player in the state of Iowa and the best player from surrounding states, and you've got to provide facilities that are available to players that want to work hard," he said.

Now he has traded his coach's whistle for administrative duties, which include athletic department strategic plan initiatives.

About: Mark Hankins has gone from coaching golf to administering all sports at Iowa.
