As more women decide to give birth at home, midwives like Lori Orme are there to provide assistance and support every step of the way.

Lori Orme is a certified midwife who has attended over 250 out of hospital births, most of them being home births. Delivering at home is a safe alternative to delivering a baby in a hospital. Often in a hospital, pregnancy and delivery are treated as a medical condition and not as a natural process of life.

Maggie Carroll recently delivered her first child at home under Lori Orme’s supervision. Maggie said, “We were so happy to be able to have baby Emily at home. My labor was almost 48 hours, and I know that if I would have been in the hospital they would have broken my water to try and speed up the delivery process. If labor had not progressed as the doctors wanted, I would have ended up with a cesarean section. This is not what I wanted for my birthing plan. Lori Orme was amazing and was by my side the whole time. It was wonderful to know that she was there.”

With a high percentage of women ending up with cesarean sections when they go to the hospital, home births are becoming a better alternative. One third of all births in the United States are delivered by cesarean section. This is higher than most other countries in the world. Many believe that this is because an arbitrary timeline is put on a woman's labor and delivery. If labor does not progress at the rate that the hospital and doctors feel that it should, they will recommend a cesarean section. Many times this is because they have already broken the expectant mother’s water to speed up the delivery process, and this can cause problems if she does not deliver soon. During a home birth, your body is allowed to labor naturally and you are not on any timeline.

Lori Orme is a certified midwife who believes that homebirth is a safe option. Pregnancy and delivery should not be seen as a medical condition but rather as a natural process that is to be guided and not pushed. As hospitals become stricter with labor and delivery guidelines, more women are turning to home births as a safe and more comfortable alternative to giving birth at a hospital. Midwives like Lori Orme are there to guide women through every step of their labor and delivery.
